Pueo Creations: Do Something That Moves You!

The Story Of Why I Founded Pueo Creations

Maui is my home, creativity defines my work, & the ocean is my love...

As Pueo Creations continues to grow, it consistently presents me with satisfying work in website design and marketing, and connects me to wonderful clients and businesses. I thought it appropriate to take a moment to reflect.

Having grown up on Maui, I was fortunate to have been given a lifestyle centered around nature and the tropical ocean surrounding the Hawaiian islands.

About three years ago, after living in Santa Barbara for roughly a decade, I decided to move back home to Maui. The decision was a big one, and came with about a year of second guessing. I didn't have any idea how long I wanted to stay on Maui, what work I would do, or how I would reintegrate myself back into the community. I'd officially moved out of my comfort zone and felt like I was living in an in-between phase of unanswered questions.

With no choice but to sit with that feeling, I let all the unanswered questions remain. I created a simple routine of getting in the ocean every day, spending time with my family, and reconnecting with childhood friends. I simplified, slowed down and learned how to be comfortable with discomfort.

In retrospect, a quote by Denis Waitley perfectly describes the state that I was in…

"A dream is your creative vision for your life in the future. You must break out of your current comfort zone and become comfortable with the unfamiliar and the unknown."

Once I accepted this transition period, trusted in my decision to move back to Maui, and continued to follow my simple daily routine, small changes started to occur. It was then that I realized I knew one thing for sure. I know now, more than ever, that the ocean is what orients me. It will always be at the top of my priority list when it comes to lifestyle and determining where I choose to live. Whether it’s surfing, paddling, swimming, or just being near it, the ocean is something I simply cannot live without.

"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back to from whence we came" - JFK

Sometimes it just takes one thing that you are sure of to begin to put the rest of the pieces together. No one ever said it would be easy but they say starting is the hardest part...so I started to settle in and build a new chapter on Maui.

Finding enjoyable, meaningful work that can also financially support you is tough, regardless of where you live. And, in my experience, for various reasons, it's much more challenging on Maui. Finding jobs in Santa Barbara had been so easy that it almost became an afterthought, and the temptation to skip right back over to the mainland was momentarily, heartbreakingly real.

But, Santa Barbara isn't Maui, not even close. Just like anything worth fighting for, you have to want it enough to manifest the solutions, and ruthlessly decide to find the answers. Any challenges Maui presents professionally are dwarfed by its ocean, plethora of microclimates, comfortable humid environment, lack of freeways and billboards, and tight-knit community of wonderfully diverse people.

I decided I had to build a business that inspires me and my clients. I wanted to create work that authentically connects me to Maui's precious community, while making a tangible positive difference for people and companies of all types.

Thus was born the idea of  Pueo Creations. My vision was to build a business development company that offers highly effective marketing, website design and development, and photography services. With an undying passion to be creative and help businesses reach their full potential, I noticed that Maui lacked the quality services that Pueo Creations offers. I have over ten years of marketing experience, from a wide variety of industries, plus a thorough understanding of, and personal connection with, many Maui businesses. This combination of experience and inspiration to help business growth on Maui led me to craft the formula which has now become Pueo Creations.

I feel empowered and so lucky to have manifested this opportunity. I'm also incredibly grateful to be working in partnership with Matt McDonald, who is a wizard when it comes to photography. We make a great team, and I feel honored to feature his work. The photos throughout this post (aside from the paddling photo), Pueo Creations website and Facebook page, as well as those on the Mana Foods Website are all his. Treat yourself to some eye-candy and take a look!

So, maybe it was the ocean that called me back, or maybe it was my family, or perhaps it was just time for a change. Either way, I know now that I'm undoubtedly where I belong, and the best, and laughably ironic, part of this whole winding journey is that the most challenging piece is what has the tightest hold on me now. Founding Pueo Creations has completed the puzzle of unanswered questions.

I'm excited, I'm inspired and I'm ready for whatever challenges come my way.

As long as I can say that Maui is my home, creativity defines my work, and that the ocean is my love, then all is right in my world.
